About Transportation

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to welcome your scholars back to the school bus for the 2020-2021 school year. As we continue to operate within the requirements of COVID-19 CDC and SDCOE Guidelines, your scholars' bus ride will look very different. The Oceanside Unified School District Transportation Department has implemented new protocols that include regular sanitizing, temperature and symptom screening, protective equipment and hand sanitizing equipment on the buses. All of our Transportation Team has been trained on proper social distancing, sanitizing and safety protocols to reduce the risk of infection and to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The following procedures have been adopted and implemented by the Oceanside Unified School District Transportation Department. All the following requirements must be met to ensure the safe transportation of each scholar. If you do not feel that you can comply with these temporary requirements, we encourage you to find other forms of transportation.

  • As practicable, please screen your child for symptoms before leaving for the bus stop each morning; keep scholars home if they have symptoms.
  • Students are encouraged to wear face coverings at school bus stops and while on the bus.
  • Scholars are required to maintain physical distancing (minimum 6 feet) at bus stops.
  • It is requested that parents wait with their scholars at the bus stop until they have completed symptom screening and entered the bus.

Temperature checks and COVID-19 symptom screening is mandatory. If your scholar's temperature is 100.4 or higher, or they are displaying symptoms of the virus, he/she will not be permitted to ride the bus.

Symptom Screening will consist of a series of questions to determine if they have experienced any symptoms associated with COVID-19. (If the scholar is nonverbal or isn’t able to understand or answer these questions then the parent or guardian will be required to answer.)

  1. Do you have a new cough, nasal congestion, or a runny nose?
  2. Are you experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing?
  3. Are you having new muscle pain or fatigue?
  4. Do you have a headache (that is not normal for you)?
  5. Do you have a sore throat?
  6. Are you experiencing a new loss of taste or smell?
  7. Are you experiencing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea?
  8. Do you have a new rash?
  9. Have you been exposed to anyone who has been tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks?

Face coverings are encouraged for the duration of the bus ride. (If your child has a specific medical condition that would preclude them from wearing a mask, please call the Transportation Department for further assistance.)

  • All scholars will be encouraged to use District provided hand sanitizer before boarding the bus.
  • Scholars will be loaded from the back of the bus to the front, and will be unloaded front to back both at home and school.
  • Scholars are prohibited from moving seats.

Parents, Guardians and Non-Transportation Staff will not be permitted to board the bus.

To limit contact, minimize cross contamination and to reduce any additional tracking if a scholar or staff becomes infected with COVID-19, only scholars and assigned transportation staff members will be allowed on the bus.

Parents/Guardians will be notified if their scholar has been exposed to COVID-19. If exposure has been confirmed the District will notify all exposed parties and require each party to quarantine for 14 days. The bus will be thoroughly disinfected per COVID-19 CDC and SDCOE guidelines before putting back into service.

Please note the protocols for school bus transportation may change as we receive updated guidance. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these changes.

We look forward to being back behind the wheel!

With gratitude,

The Oceanside Unified Transportation Team
