CAASPP - California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress

On January 1, 2014, California Education Code Section 60640 established the CAASPP System of assessments. The CAASPP - CalEdFacts Web page provides a more detailed overview of the system. The CAASPP System (PDF) includes the following required assessments and additional resources.

  • Smarter Balanced Assessments – The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, Interim Assessments, and Digital Library are all part of the CAASPP System.
     
  • The California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics are given in grades three through eight and grade eleven. The 2017 spring pilot CAA for science will be given to students enrolled in grades five and eight and once in high school (i.e., grade ten, eleven, or twelve). The California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for Science will no longer be administered. Only eligible students may participate in the administration of the CAAs.
     
  • California Science Tests (CAST) will be piloted in spring 2017. All students enrolled in grades five, eight will be administered the pilot test. High school students will be selected by grade to participate once (i.e., grade ten, eleven, or twelve). This new assessment is aligned with the California Next Generation Science Standards. The California Standards Test (CST) and California Modified Assessment (CMA) for Science will no longer be administered.

CA English Language Development Test

State and federal law require that school districts administer a test of English language proficiency to newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English and to students who are English learners as an annual assessment. For California public school students, this test is the California English Language Development Test (CELDT).

The CELDT has three purposes:

  1. To identify students who are limited English proficient
  2. To determine the level of English language proficiency of students who are limited English proficient
  3. To assess the progress of limited English proficient students in acquiring the skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing in English

CELDT assesses students in grades kindergarten through twelve and is aligned to the English Language Development (ELD) standards. The CELDT test components are:

Listening

  • Following oral directions
  • Extended listening comprehension
  • Rhyming
  • Listening comprehension

Speaking

  • Oral vocabulary
  • Speech functions
  • Choosing and giving reasons
  • Four-picture narrative

Reading

  • Alphabet recognition
  • Word analysis
  • Fluency and systematic vocabulary development
  • Reading comprehension
  • Literary analysis

Writing

  • Writing words
  • Grammar and structure
  • Writing sentences
  • Writing a short composition
